
Women consistently contrasted their own experiences with today's youth sports environment. They described a movement away from accessible neighborhood courts and community centers toward organized travel teams, private training, and increasingly commercialized youth sports. Many worried that children now have fewer opportunities for unstructured play—the experiences they believe developed creativity, resilience, leadership, and a genuine love of the game. They also expressed concern that declining investment in community spaces has created barriers for many young athletes, particularly those without the financial resources to participate in expensive club programs.
Gina Castelli played basketball at Archbishop Carroll High School and Canisius College, helping the Griffs to the Elite 8 of the 1983 NCAA Division II championship. She coached Siena College (Albany, N.Y.) for 22 years and at LeMoyne College (Syracuse, N.Y.) for eight seasons.
Texlin Quinney played at Scared Heart Academy (Buffalo, N.Y.) and at Seton Hall University. She played one season for the WNBA’s Indiana Fever and coaches basketball in Atlanta, Georgia.
Kendra Brim is an athlete, coach, and community leader. The all‑time leading scorer at Nardin Academy she earned a political science degree from Colgate and her MBA at the University at Buffalo. Her consulting firm, Out of Bounds, supports student‑athletes and former athletes.
