Community centers as third spaces
Community centers emerged as far more than athletic facilities. Women repeatedly described them as safe, welcoming "third spaces" where they found mentors, supportive coaches, and lasting friendships. These centers introduced many to organized basketball while providing stability during challenging periods of their lives. The combination of accessible facilities, committed adults, and neighborhood connections helped cultivate not only skilled athletes but also confident young women whose experiences extended well beyond the basketball court.
Kendra Brim
Kendra Brim is an athlete, coach, and community leader. The all‑time leading scorer at Nardin Academy she earned a degree in political science from Colgate and her MBA at the University at Buffalo. Her consulting firm, Out of Bounds, supports student‑athletes and former athletes.
Cecelie Owens
Cecelie Owens set 19 program records for the Buffalo State College women’s basketball team. In 1998, she became the first female African-American inducted into school’s athletic hall of fame. In 2007, she founded G.I.R.L.S. Sports Foundation, Inc., providing opportunities and mentorship.
Gina Castelli
Gina Castelli played basketball at Archbishop Carroll High School and Canisius College, helping the Griffs to the Elite 8 of the 1983 NCAA Division II championship. She coached Siena College (Albany, N.Y.) for 22 years and at LeMoyne College (Syracuse, N.Y.) for eight seasons.
